The East Coast of Africa is home to a large variety of rippable waves, from scary shallow reef breaks to mellow sand bars that chop and change with the currents and tides. We focus our tours on the coastline running from just north of Durban all the way up to Ponte de Oure in Mozambique.

WAVES ON THE NORTH COAST OF KZN

The waves on the north coast of KZN are powerful and hollow with lots of barrels. The waves break on sand or reef and vary depending on the wind and tide. Many of the professional surfers stop off in Ballito to get away from the contest scene in Durban and film surf movies and have photo shoots. Ballito has 9 different breaks within 10 minutes drive. The waves are mostly right handers on the predominately southerly swell, with a few lefts if the swell is in an easterly direction. KZN gets waves all year round, although the most consistent time of year is from January to September. September to November is usually the windiest time of year with April to July the best due to offshore winds blowing most mornings.

WAVES IN MOZAMBIQUE

The waves in Mozambique are long right hand points that run down the line for hundreds of meter’s and will surely test the strength of your legs. Shore breaks can be surfed in the bay on the high tide, and are protected from the westerly wind. The waves in Mozambique are not as powerful as KZN but at 6-8 foot you will still get a good thrashing if you wipe out. Paddling out is great because you walk up the point and paddle 20 meter’s from the top of the point and you are in the line-up. The water is very warm (mid 20’s degrees centigrade) and the sun is extremely hot so suntan cream and a rash vest are a must. The waves are best up to 6 foot and very fun to ride. The points work best in cyclone east swells but waves are excellent from November to August and the onshore winds gather momentum from September-October. The offshore winds blow in the mornings from March to July. Mozambique is primarily a scuba diving area with a few surfers and kite boarders so the crowds are minimal.
